Fürdszobák

Fürdszobák, in standard Hungarian spelling "fürdőszobák", are rooms designed for personal hygiene in residential or public buildings. They typically contain a toilet, a washbasin, and one or more of a shower or a bathtub, or a combination unit. In modern apartments the layout is often compact; hotels may offer en suite bathrooms, while hospitals design bathrooms for accessibility and sanitation.

Design and construction emphasize moisture resistance and drainage. Surfaces are usually ceramic tiles or waterproof panels, with ventilation provided by natural or mechanical systems. Heating may be supplied by radiators or underfloor systems. Plumbing is arranged for reliable water supply and drainage, and many bathrooms include storage, mirror cabinets, and electrical outlets in water-safe locations. Accessibility features such as grab bars, non-slip flooring, and wider doorways are common in compliant facilities.

Variations occur by building type and region. Residential bathrooms differ from those in hotels, offices, or hospitals, where layouts prioritize accessibility and cleaning efficiency. In newer constructions, wet rooms—where a shower area merges with continuous waterproofing of the floor—are increasingly popular for their flexible space use and ease of maintenance.

Historically, indoor bathrooms spread in Hungary during the late 19th and early 20th centuries with urban modernization and expanded running water and sewerage systems. Older buildings may retain small or irregularly shaped bathrooms, while contemporary design often aims for functional layouts, efficient use of space, and compliance with current building standards.
