Fæðingarverkir, also known as labor pains, are the muscular contractions of the uterus that result in the dilation and thinning of the cervix, ultimately leading to the expulsion of the fetus and placenta from the mother's body. These contractions are a crucial part of the childbirth process. They typically begin with a tightening sensation in the abdomen and back, gradually increasing in intensity, duration, and frequency.

The onset of labor can vary greatly among individuals. Early labor, or the latent phase, is characterized by mild contractions that may be irregular and can last for many hours or even days. During this phase, the cervix begins to efface (thin out) and dilate slightly. Active labor is when contractions become more regular, stronger, and closer together. The cervix dilates more rapidly, typically from about 4 centimeters to 10 centimeters, and this phase is usually shorter than early labor. The transition phase, the final part of active labor, involves the most intense contractions and rapid cervical dilation.

The pain associated with labor contractions is caused by the muscles of the uterus contracting and the pressure of the baby's head on the cervix and pelvic floor. Various methods are available for pain management during labor, including breathing techniques, massage, hydrotherapy, epidural anesthesia, and analgesics. The duration and intensity of labor pains depend on numerous factors, including the size of the baby, the mother's anatomy, previous labor experiences, and the presence of any medical interventions. Understanding the physiological process of labor pains is essential for expectant parents and healthcare providers.
