A large group can mob and drive away potential threats more effectively than individual pairs. Additionally, the presence of many birds can help in locating food sources. When a colony is established near abundant food, individuals can follow successful foragers back to their feeding grounds.

Colonies also facilitate mate finding and social learning. The high density of potential mates makes it easier for birds to find partners. Young birds can learn essential survival skills, such as foraging techniques and predator avoidance, by observing older, more experienced individuals within the colony.

However, living in close proximity also presents challenges. High population density can lead to increased competition for resources like nesting sites and food. It can also facilitate the spread of diseases and parasites.
