The rim flange is the outermost edge of the rim, extending slightly outwards from the barrel. Its purpose is to retain the tire bead and prevent it from dislodging from the rim, especially during aggressive driving or under high-pressure conditions.

Some wheel designs, particularly multi-piece wheels, may have additional components. These can include outer lips and inner barrels that are bolted or welded together to create the final rim assembly.
