Fysiologia

Fysiologia is the branch of biology that studies how living organisms function. It explores the physical and chemical processes that sustain life, from the activities of cells and tissues to the operations of whole organ systems, and how these processes adapt to internal changes and external environments.

The field covers multiple levels of organization. Cellular physiology looks at ion transport, metabolism, signaling, and energy use. Organ physiology examines systems such as the circulatory, respiratory, nervous, endocrine, digestive, renal, and musculoskeletal systems. Systemic physiology integrates these parts to explain how the body maintains stability, or homeostasis, through coordinated regulation and feedback.

Comparative physiology compares how different species solve similar functional problems, revealing principles of adaptation and diversity. Core concepts include homeostasis, feedback control, regulation by nerves and hormones, and interactions among systems. Physiologists study how physical forces (pressure, flow, impedance), chemical reactions, and genetic factors influence function, and how function changes with development, aging, disease, or environment.

Methods in physiology range from bedside measurements and laboratory experiments to imaging, electrophysiology, molecular biology, and computational modeling. Model organisms and human studies contribute to translating basic findings into clinical and applied contexts.

Applications of physiology include medicine, pharmacology, sports science, nutrition, and environmental or occupational health. Understanding physiological mechanisms helps explain health, disease, and responses to therapies, enabling evidence-based approaches to care and optimization of performance and well-being.
