Futures-based, also written futures-based, is a term used in finance to describe strategies, products, or exposures that obtain economic participation in an asset class through futures contracts rather than by holding the underlying asset or a cash index. It is commonly applied to commodities, equity indices, currencies, and interest-rate instruments.

Futures contracts are standardized agreements to buy or sell an asset at a set price on a future date. Investors and fund managers achieve futures-based exposure by taking long or short positions and frequently rolling expiring contracts into later ones to maintain continuous exposure. The approach often involves margin, which provides leverage but also requires mark-to-market accounting and periodic funding of gains and losses. Price changes reflect expectations about future supply and demand, as well as roll yield from the contract curve (contango or backwardation).

Futures-based exposure is widely used for hedging price risk, gaining cost-efficient exposure to markets, or implementing directional or spread strategies. Exchange-traded products and funds that track futures-based indices or commodities illustrate the approach, though they may incur tracking errors due to roll costs and other frictions.

Risks include leverage magnifying losses, roll risk from contango or backwardation, tracking error relative to the target exposure, liquidity constraints in less-traded markets, and regulatory or counterparty risks inherent in derivative use. Due diligence on methodology, funding, and liquidity is essential when considering futures-based products.

Origins lie in established futures markets where standardized contracts were developed for risk management and price discovery. Today, futures-based strategies are a common component of institutional portfolios and retail products seeking efficient, scalable market exposure.
