Fundidos

Fundidos is a term used in metallurgy and manufacturing to refer to objects produced by metal casting, or to the casting process itself. A fundido is the product obtained when molten metal is poured into a mold and allowed to solidify. The term comes from fundir, meaning to melt. In common usage, fundidos can denote either the cast pieces or the act of casting as a technique.

Casting methods vary and are chosen based on material, geometry, tolerance, surface finish, and production volume. Common methods include sand casting, investment casting (lost-wax), die casting, and permanent mold casting. Each method involves mold preparation, metal melting, pouring, cooling, and post-processing such as trimming, surface finishing, and machining.

Materials used for fundidos range from ferrous and nonferrous metals to certain polymers and composite materials in specialized processes. Ferrous castings include cast iron and steel; nonferrous castings include aluminum, bronze, brass, and copper alloys. Casting enables complex shapes or internal cavities that are difficult to achieve with other forming methods, and it is widely used in automotive, aerospace, machinery, sculpture, and consumer goods.

Quality and defects are key considerations in casting. Common issues include porosity, cold shuts, misruns, shrinkage, and inclusions, which can affect strength and accuracy. Finishing steps such as cleaning, machining, heat treatment, and coating are often required to meet specifications.

Historically, metal casting dates back to ancient civilizations and has evolved with technologies such as lost-wax investment casting and modern automated foundries, making fundidos essential across industry and art.
