Fugensand

Fugensand, commonly referred to as jointing sand, is a material used to fill the gaps between paving units such as concrete pavers, natural stone slabs, or bricks. It is selected for its grain size, flow properties, and ability to stabilize the paving surface. In many markets it exists in two main forms: a dry, loose sand that is swept into the joints and compacted, and polymeric or cementitious variants that bind when moisture is applied, creating a more cohesive joint.

Composition and variants: Fugensand is typically a quartz or silica sand designed for easy penetration into narrow joints. Dry jointing sand relies on mechanical compaction to lock paving units in place. Polymeric or cementitious versions add binders (polymer coatings or cementitious components) to achieve improved resistance to wash-out, weed growth, and insect intrusion. Some products are formulated for permeable or restricted drainage systems, depending on the intended installation.

Installation: Installation generally involves cleaning and drying the surface, sweeping the sand into the joints, and then compacting with a plate compactor to settle the material. After excess sand is removed from the surface, the product-specific procedure is followed, which may include light brushing and a controlled moisture application to activate binders in polymeric or cementitious variants.

Performance and maintenance: Properly installed fugensand helps stabilize paving, reduces weed encroachment, and minimizes movement of the units under load. It may require replenishment over time due to erosion, weathering, or heavy traffic. Regular maintenance includes keeping joints clean and reapplying jointing sand as needed to maintain stability and appearance.
