Frontosa

Frontosa, scientifically known as Cyphotilapia frontosa, is a species of cichlid native to Lake Tanganyika in Africa. These large, peaceful fish are highly prized in the aquarium hobby for their striking appearance and calm demeanor. Frontosa are characterized by their distinctive hump on the forehead, which becomes more pronounced as the fish matures, especially in males. They typically have a base coloration of silver to light blue, adorned with several vertical dark bars, often numbering seven or eight. Some variations exhibit an iridescent blue sheen on their heads and fins.

In their natural habitat, Frontosa inhabit the rocky depths of Lake Tanganyika, where they feed on small fish and invertebrates. In aquariums, they require a large tank with plenty of rockwork and caves to provide hiding places. A sand or fine gravel substrate is ideal. They are social fish and are best kept in groups, with a preference for a harem-style setup where one male is kept with several females. Frontosa are omnivores and will readily accept a varied diet of high-quality pellets, flakes, and frozen foods such as brine shrimp and mysis shrimp. Due to their size and peaceful nature, they are compatible with other large, similarly tempered cichlids or robust fish that will not be intimidated. Water parameters are crucial; they thrive in hard, alkaline water with temperatures typically ranging from 75-80°F (24-27°C).
