Cyphotilapia

Cyphotilapia is a genus of cichlid fish native to Lake Tanganyika in Africa. The genus currently contains two recognized species, Cyphotilapia frontosa and Cyphotilapia gibbericeps. These fish are commonly known as "frontosa" or "fronties" in the aquarium trade. They are characterized by their distinctive humped forehead, particularly in males, and their striking blue and white striped coloration.

Cyphotilapia frontosa is typically found in deeper, rocky areas of the lake, often in caves and crevices. They are schooling fish and can be observed in large groups. Cyphotilapia gibbericeps is more widespread and can be found in various habitats, including sandy areas and among rocks. Both species are omnivores, feeding on small invertebrates, crustaceans, and occasionally small fish.

In the aquarium hobby, frontosa are popular for their size, impressive appearance, and relatively peaceful disposition, especially for their size. They require large tanks with plenty of rockwork and hiding places. Water parameters in captivity should mimic those of Lake Tanganyika, meaning hard, alkaline water with good oxygenation. They are slow-growing and can live for many years in well-maintained aquariums. Breeding is often mouthbrooding, with the female carrying the eggs and fry in her mouth for protection.
