Friidrottstävlingar, often translated as athletics competitions or track and field events, encompass a wide range of athletic disciplines contested by individuals or teams. These events are categorized into three main groups: track events, field events, and combined events. Track events involve running races of various distances, including sprints, middle-distance, and long-distance races, as well as hurdle races and steeplechase. Relays, where teams of runners pass a baton, are also a prominent track discipline.

Combined events, such as the decathlon for men and heptathlon for women, require athletes to compete in a series of different track and field disciplines, accumulating points based on their performance in each event. The athlete with the highest total score wins.
