Freiflieger

Freiflieger, literally “free flyer,” is a term used in German-speaking aviation and model aviation to describe a class of aircraft designed to fly without ongoing external control after launch. In free-flight operation, the model is not steered by a radio link or a tether; its flight path is determined by its design, the launch method, and atmospheric conditions.

The concept encompasses both unpowered free-flight models, such as gliders, and some small powered designs that operate without continuous external guidance. In all cases, Freiflieger are intended to fly independently once released or launched, with control surfaces typically fixed or set before flight rather than actively managed during flight. This distinguishes them from remote-controlled or tethered systems, where a human operator continually guides the aircraft.

Design and operation emphasize stability, predictable behavior, and recoverable flight characteristics. Key considerations include center of gravity, airframe weight, wing loading, and propulsive or gravitational energy. Free-flight models are often launched by hand or via catapult and rely on aerodynamics and weather to sustain flight, sometimes achieving impressive durations or gliding distances.

History and usage: Freiflieger have a long-standing presence in model-aviation clubs, particularly in the early days of the hobby when radio control was impractical or unavailable. They contributed to understanding flight stability, lift, drag, and endurance. Although radio-controlled models became dominant in later decades, free-flight remains practiced as a niche activity and a discipline for preserving traditional building techniques and experimental methods.
