Fotplacering

Fotplacering, or foot placement, describes the position and orientation of the feet in relation to the body and to the surface one stands on or moves across. It encompasses foot angle, stance width, toe orientation, and the distribution of weight between the feet.

In biomechanics and gait analysis, foot placement is a key factor for balance, stability, and propulsion. Analysts measure variables such as step width, foot strike pattern, and toe-out angle to assess efficiency and detect abnormalities. Small changes in foot placement can affect knee alignment and hip loading.

In artistic and athletic activities, foot placement is a technical element. In ballet, for instance, turnout and precise positions of the feet (e.g., first through fifth positions) are defined by established cues and alignments. In running and field sports, stance width, foot strike, and the direction of landing influence performance and injury risk.

Ergonomics and rehabilitation also use foot placement to improve posture and mobility. Therapists may guide patients to align feet under hips, avoid excessive pronation, and gradually adjust stance during gait retraining after injury.

Practical considerations include footwear, surface, and vision. Shoes should support proper alignment, and surfaces should allow stable contact. Common cues for coaching include keeping the knees aligned with the toes, distributing weight evenly, and maintaining a straightforward direction of travel.

Measurements can be qualitative or quantitative, using observation, video analysis, or pressure-sensing mats.
