The term is a portmanteau of photo and gavel, highlighting the convergence of image production and a decisive, legal-style confirmation of a transaction.

In fictional settings, a fotgavel may be a handheld gadget or integrated marketplace software that takes a captured image and immediately enters it into a live auction or licensing pool. A built-in AI or algorithm assesses value, negotiates terms, and, when a bid threshold is reached, emits a digital 'gavel' signal to seal the deal and deliver ownership metadata to the buyer.

In real-world discourse, fotgavel functions largely as a metaphor or meme used to discuss the future of automated curation, digital marketplaces, and the ethics of algorithmic decision-making in photography.
