This typically includes mooring lines, also known as dock lines or mooring ropes, which are strong ropes made from synthetic materials like nylon or polyester. These lines are attached to cleats on the vessel and to mooring bitts, bollards, or rings on a dock, pier, or quay.

In addition to ropes, specialized hardware is essential. Shackles and thimbles are used to connect mooring lines to cleats and to protect the rope from abrasion. Fairleads or chocks are metal fittings on the vessel's deck that guide the mooring lines, reducing friction and preventing chafing.

For heavier vessels or in areas with strong currents or tidal ranges, heavier duty equipment may be required. This can include chains, which are more resistant to abrasion than ropes, and specialized mooring systems like buoys or anchors. Mooring buoys are floating devices to which a vessel can be attached, often used in sheltered anchorages. Anchoring involves deploying a heavy weight that embeds itself into the seabed, providing a secure hold.

The proper selection and maintenance of fortøyningsutstyr are crucial for the safety of the vessel and its surroundings. Regular inspection for wear, fraying, or damage is necessary to ensure the integrity of the mooring. The length and strength of mooring lines should be appropriate for the vessel size, expected weather conditions, and the mooring location.
