An anchorage is a designated location where a vessel may drop anchor and remain stationary. Anchorages are used to ride out adverse weather, to wait for a berth, or to perform cargo operations without occupying a harbor slip. They are charted on nautical maps and typically have defined limits, shelter considerations, and advised swing radii.

Selection criteria for anchorages include water depth, bottom composition (sand, mud, clay, or rock), shelter from wind and waves, and protection from currents. The holding ground affects how well an anchor sets and resists movement. Anchorages are chosen to minimize risks such as dragging, collision, or obstruction to other traffic.

Crews assess approach courses, ensure adequate clearance from other anchored vessels and fixed hazards, and maintain a suitable scope of chain or rope. The scope is generally greater in heavier weather or stronger currents. Swing circles should be estimated so that the vessel does not contact shore, other boats, or underwater hazards.

Regulatory and safety considerations are important in selecting and using an anchorage. Local regulations may restrict anchoring in channels, near environmentally sensitive areas, or during certain times. Navigational notices to mariners and local authority guidelines provide pertinent details. In some areas, permanent moorings or designated anchorage zones supplement or replace traditional anchoring.
