Formsatz

Formsatz, also written Formensatz, is a term used in German printing and publishing to denote the layout and typesetting of printed forms or documents. It describes the process of assembling text, images, and form elements into the final, production-ready form, including page structure, typography, margins, line length, column grids, and the placement of form fields, rules, and borders where applicable. Historically, Formsatz referred to the manual setting of type on composing sticks and the preparation of a forme for printing plates. In contemporary workflows, it is largely digital and forms part of prepress or desktop publishing, with layout software defining the arrangement and files prepared for offset or digital printing.
