Forecastingrunning is the practice of predicting running-related outcomes, such as race finishing times, weekly training progress, or injury risk, using quantitative methods. It blends sports science with statistics and machine learning to provide point estimates or probabilistic forecasts. The goal is to assist athletes, coaches, race organizers, and teams in planning and pacing.

Common inputs include historical race results, training logs (volume and intensity), physiological measurements (when available), GPS and wearables data, course profiles, weather, and pacing plans. Data quality, measurement error, and missing values affect model performance.

Forecasting approaches range from traditional time series to machine learning. Time-series methods (ARIMA, exponential smoothing) forecast from historical trends. Regression models relate finishing times to predictors such as recent training load, age, and prior results. Machine learning methods (random forests, gradient boosting, neural nets) handle nonlinear patterns, while survival analysis and Bayesian models address censoring and uncertainty. Ensembles are common.

Outputs include point forecasts of finishing times, probabilistic forecasts with prediction intervals, and risk estimates such as the chance of finishing under a target time. Evaluation uses MAE, RMSE, and calibration checks; probabilistic forecasts are assessed with log-likelihood or Brier score and reliability plots.

Applications include pacing strategy design, training plan adjustments, and event logistics. Challenges include individual variability, data sparsity for some runners, overfitting, course-specific effects, non-stationarity, and the need to communicate uncertainty clearly. Privacy and ethical considerations should accompany model use to avoid overclaiming predictability.
