Fontibre

Fontibre is a small village situated in the central part of the province of Burgos, within the autonomous community of Castile and León. The settlement lies at an elevation of approximately 750 metres above sea level, perched on the foothills of the Sierra de la Demanda. Its coordinates are roughly 42°48′N latitude and 3°49′W longitude, placing it about 25 kilometres west of the provincial capital of Burgos.

The population of Fontibre is modest, with census figures indicating just over 100 residents. The demographic profile is typical of rural Spanish communities, characterized by an aging population and a declining birth rate, although recent initiatives aimed at rural tourism have sought to attract younger families and entrepreneurs.

Historically, Fontibre dates back to the Middle Ages, with the earliest written reference appearing in a 12th‑century charter that listed it as a property of the Abbey of San Juan de la Peña. The village has traditionally relied on agriculture and pastoralism, cultivating cereals and raising sheep. In the 19th century, a brief quartz mining operation brought a short spike in economic activity before the industry waned.

Today, the local economy is dominated by small‑scale farming, artisanal cheese production, and a modest agritourism sector. The village is known for its annual “Feria de la Quesería”, a festival celebrating regional cheeses and cured meats. Cultural heritage sites include the 13th‑century Church of San Miguel, a modest Romanesque structure that serves as the focal point of communal life.

Fontibre lies within the jurisdiction of the municipality of Valle de Valdemaña. Public services are provided by the municipal government, including basic health care, a primary school, and a community centre. Transportation links rely primarily on a local road that connects the village to the regional highway network; the nearest railway station is in Burgos, accessible by bus routes that operate twice daily.
