Fluorkoncentrations refer to the amount of fluoride ions present in a medium, most commonly in water, and are typically expressed in milligrams per liter (mg/L) or parts per million (ppm). In drinking-water contexts these concentrations are influenced by natural geology, water fluoridation practices, industrial discharges, and other human activities. Natural groundwater often contains fluoride at low to moderate levels; regional ranges are highly variable, with higher values in some volcanic and sedimentary basins. Public health guidelines describe target ranges that aim to optimize dental benefits while minimizing adverse effects.

Health guidelines differentiate between beneficial and harmful exposure. Low to moderate fluoride levels can reduce dental caries, whereas excessive long-term exposure increases the risk of dental fluorosis in children and, at very high concentrations, skeletal fluorosis. International and national bodies provide recommended or enforceable limits. The World Health Organization recommends a guideline value of 1.5 mg/L for drinking-water fluoride. In the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency sets an enforceable maximum contaminant level of 4 mg/L for drinking water, with a secondary standard of 2 mg/L to protect against cosmetic effects. Many countries target about 0.7–1.0 mg/L as an optimum balance in temperate climates, adjusting for exposure and intake patterns.

Measurement and monitoring methods include ion-selective electrode (ISE) determinations and colorimetric methods (such as SPADNS), as well as ion chromatography in more detailed analyses. Routine monitoring in water utilities helps ensure concentrations stay within safe and effective ranges for public health. Fluoride can also be present in dental products and industrial processes, where exposure pathways and regulatory controls differ from drinking water.
