Flerskyddat

Flerskyddat is a term used in Swedish information security discourse to describe data, systems, or networks that are protected by multiple, independent safeguards. The concept is closely related to defense in depth: if one protection layer fails, others continue to provide security, reducing the overall risk.

The approach combines technical, administrative, and physical measures. Technical controls include encryption at rest and in transit, strong access management with least-privilege principles, multi-factor authentication, network segmentation, and continuous monitoring. Administrative controls cover security policies, employee training, incident response planning, and regular audits. Physical controls encompass secure facilities, controlled access to data centers, and secure handling of equipment. Together, these layers aim for redundancy and rapid detection and response to threats.

Common components emphasized in flerskyddat strategies are encryption, robust identity and access management, patch management and vulnerability assessment, comprehensive logging and anomaly detection, reliable data backups with tested recovery procedures, and well-practiced incident response. Governance and risk management processes, including risk assessments and business impact analyses, help determine appropriate protections and ensure usability and cost considerations are balanced.

Standards and regulatory contexts often inform flerskyddat practices. They align with frameworks such as ISO/IEC 27001 and NIST, and in Sweden may intersect with guidance from MSB (Myndigheten för samhällsskydd och beredskap) and GDPR-related requirements administered by the IMY.
