Fixedgap

Fixedgap is a term used in multiple technical domains to denote a constraint or parameter that enforces a fixed spacing between elements, events, or samples. Because it appears in different contexts, its precise meaning can vary by field, but it generally implies an exact, uniform gap rather than a variable interval.

In mathematics and computer science, fixed gap often refers to selecting a subsequence from a ordered set where the distance between consecutive chosen elements is a fixed constant. For example, in a sequence of positions, a fixed gap of k means the indices satisfy i_{t+1} = i_t + k. This creates a regularly spaced pattern that can simplify analysis or algorithm design.

In scheduling and operations research, fixed-gap constraints enforce uniform spacing between tasks or events. This is used to maintain regular breaks, control resource usage, or ensure predictable timing in processes such as manufacturing lines, transportation timetables, or maintenance cycles.

In signal processing and data collection, fixed-gap (or fixed-interval) sampling refers to recording measurements at uniform time or space intervals. This regular sampling supports straightforward reconstruction, analysis, and filtering, and is contrasted with irregular or adaptive sampling schemes.

Variants of the concept include fixed-gap with flexibility at boundaries, where the spacing is fixed between interior elements but may be adjusted near the start or end, and partial fixed-gap constraints, where only some portions of a sequence must adhere to a fixed gap.
