Fisherwomens

Fisherwomens is a term sometimes used to describe women who participate in the fishing sector, including catching, processing, distribution, and support activities along fisheries value chains. The term underscores women's ongoing involvement in fisheries across diverse regions, from small-scale coastal communities to larger commercial operations. While the exact roles vary by region and fishery, fisherwomens commonly contribute to income, food security, and community resilience.

Across many cultures, women have historically taken on post-harvest tasks such as sorting, cleaning, drying, salting, smoking, and marketing fish. In some communities they also assist with harvesting, manage family or community fishing ventures, or run women-led processing and trading enterprises. The involvement of fisherwomens is shaped by local ecosystems, cultural norms, and economic opportunities, resulting in a spectrum of responsibilities and leadership levels.

Fisherwomens often face barriers such as limited access to fishing licenses or rights, capital, and technical training; gender-based discrimination; and safety concerns at sea or in markets. Data on women's participation in fisheries is frequently incomplete, which can obscure their economic contributions. International bodies, national governments, and non-governmental organizations promote gender equality in fisheries through policy reforms, capacity-building, data collection, and support for women-led cooperatives and enterprises.
