Firetending

Firetending is the practice of managing flame within a fire performance, typically as part of a larger show. A firetender, sometimes called a safety or crew member, coordinates fueling, lighting, extinguishing, and ongoing safety monitoring while a performer manipulates flame-producing props. The performer may use torches, staffs, poi, or other prop devices, and the firetender ensures that fuels are prepared, equipment is in good condition, and the performance area remains safe for both participants and spectators.

Equipment and practices are diverse. Common flame props include torch heads, burning staffs, and flaming poi. Fuels used in professional settings vary by jurisdiction and safety policy; they may include specialized lamp oils or other approved fuels. Firetenders also provide extinguishing tools, such as extinguishers, fire blankets, and buckets of water, and they maintain a ready plan for quenching flames if needed. Safe operations emphasize controlled environments, clear audience distance, wind assessment, and contingency planning for weather changes or emergencies.

Safety and training: Firetending requires formal training in fire safety, local regulations, and risk assessment. A dedicated safety person or team usually accompanies performances, and rehearsals with all participants are standard. Clothing and behavior emphasize burn resistance—natural fibers, tied-back hair, no loose or synthetic fabrics—and strict handling of fuels and equipment.

History and context: Modern fire performance draws on multiple traditions and expanded during contemporary street theatre and festival scenes. Firetending is typically a supporting role focused on safety, resource management, and coordination with performers during acts that involve fire.
