Feuchtigkeitspräparate, also known as moisturizers, are topical products designed to hydrate the skin and reduce moisture loss. They work by forming a barrier on the skin's surface, preventing transepidermal water loss (TEWL), or by attracting and retaining water within the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of the skin.

These preparations come in various formulations, including creams, lotions, ointments, and serums, each differing in their oil and water content. Lotions typically have a higher water content and are lighter, suitable for oily or normal skin. Creams contain more oil and are thicker, providing more intense hydration for dry or normal skin. Ointments are the most occlusive, with a very high oil content, best for extremely dry or compromised skin. Serums are concentrated formulas with active ingredients, often used as a first step in a skincare routine.

Key ingredients found in feuchtigkeitspräparate include humectants like glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and urea, which draw water into the skin. Emollients, such as ceramides, fatty acids, and plant oils, smooth and soften the skin by filling in the spaces between skin cells. Occlusives, like petrolatum, dimethicone, and mineral oil, form a physical barrier to prevent water evaporation.
