In design and manufacturing literature, feinfinish is used to describe a multi-step process and its resulting surface quality, rather than a single technique. Definitions vary by material and industry, with each field adapting the term to its standards for smoothness, color consistency, and defect tolerance.

Process and techniques: Achieving feinfinish typically involves careful material preparation, fine abrading (often using grits in the range of several hundred to over a thousand), conditioning or pore-filling as appropriate, and a controlled final polish or buffing stage.
