These variations are inherent due to the limitations of materials, equipment, and human perception. In industries like printing, textiles, plastics, and coatings, establishing and adhering to farbtoleranzen is crucial for ensuring product consistency and customer satisfaction.

These tolerances are typically defined by measurable color difference values, often using color spaces like CIELAB. A specific target color is chosen, and then a maximum allowable deviation from this target is determined. This deviation is expressed as a numerical value, such as Delta E (ΔE). A lower ΔE value indicates a smaller color difference and therefore a tighter tolerance.

Factors influencing farbtoleranzen include the quality of raw materials, the precision of machinery, environmental conditions during production, and the skill of the operators. Different applications will have varying levels of acceptable tolerance.
