Farbcysteme, meaning "color systems" in German, refers to organized methods for understanding, defining, and manipulating color. These systems are crucial in various fields, including art, design, printing, and digital media. They provide a framework for communication and consistency in color representation.

One common type of color system is additive color mixing, exemplified by the RGB (Red, Green, Blue) model. In this system, colors are created by adding light. When red, green, and blue light are combined in equal proportions at maximum intensity, they produce white light. Absence of light results in black. RGB is widely used in electronic displays like monitors and televisions.

In contrast, subtractive color mixing uses pigments or dyes. The CMY (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow) model is a primary example. These colors are subtractive because they absorb certain wavelengths of light and reflect others. When these colors are mixed, they absorb more light, leading towards black. In practice, K (black) is often added as CMYK to achieve deeper blacks and improve detail in printing.

Color systems also encompass color models that describe color numerically, such as HSL (Hue, Saturation, Lightness) and HSV (Hue, Saturation, Value). These models are often more intuitive for artists and designers as they relate color to human perception. Hue represents the pure color, saturation indicates the intensity or purity of that color, and lightness/value describes how bright or dark it is.

Furthermore, standardized color systems like the Pantone Matching System (PMS) provide a consistent way to specify and reproduce colors across different materials and printing processes. These systems ensure that a specific color appears the same regardless of where or how it is produced.
