Advantages of familymanaged firms include continuity, deep organizational knowledge, aligned incentives, and the potential for resilience through patient capital and strong community ties. They can sustain a cohesive culture and adapt to local conditions, leveraging long-standing networks and reputational capital.

Challenges include governance complexity, potential conflicts between family members, and difficulties in professionalizing management. Access to external capital and talent can be constrained, and concerns about nepotism may arise if governance is weak. Succession planning and a clear governance framework are thus critical for stability.

Governance approaches commonly adopted include establishing a family council or board, creating a family constitution that sets roles and rules, appointing non-family executives or independent directors, and formalizing processes for performance review and conflict resolution.
