Fachwissenschaft

Fachwissenschaft is a term used in German-speaking higher education to denote the disciplinary science or subject-specific knowledge of a field. It refers to the body of theories, methods, empirical findings, and historiography that constitute a subject as an academic discipline, in contrast to applied practice or pedagogical considerations. Examples include the mathematical Fachwissenschaft, the historical Fachwissenschaft, or the biological Fachwissenschaft, each comprising the core content and methodological standards of the discipline.

In the context of teacher education, Fachwissenschaft is commonly contrasted with Fachdidaktik, the science of teaching that subject. Fachwissenschaft provides the content knowledge and research-informed understanding of the subject, while Fachdidaktik translates that knowledge into instructional approaches, learning goals, and assessment strategies. Together they form the professional knowledge base for teaching a subject at the school level.
