Fúngusýkingar, commonly known as fungal infections, are illnesses caused by pathogenic fungi. These infections can affect various parts of the body, including the skin, nails, hair, lungs, and internal organs. Fungi are ubiquitous in the environment, found in soil, on plants, and even in household dust, and humans can be exposed through inhalation, ingestion, or direct contact.

The severity of fungal infections ranges from superficial and mild to deep-seated and life-threatening. Superficial infections, such as athlete's foot (tinea pedis), ringworm (tinea corporis), and yeast infections (candidiasis), are quite common and typically affect the skin and mucous membranes. These are often treatable with topical antifungal medications.

More serious infections, known as invasive fungal infections, occur when fungi enter the bloodstream or invade internal organs. These are more prevalent in individuals with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV/AIDS, cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, or individuals on long-term corticosteroid therapy. Examples of invasive fungal infections include invasive candidiasis, aspergillosis, and cryptococcosis, which can cause pneumonia, meningitis, or systemic organ damage and often require intravenous antifungal drugs.

Diagnosis of fungal infections usually involves microscopic examination of samples, fungal cultures, or molecular tests. Treatment depends on the type and severity of the infection and may involve topical or oral antifungal medications. Prevention strategies include maintaining good hygiene, proper wound care, and avoiding prolonged exposure to damp environments, especially for individuals at higher risk.
