Eyebolt

An eyebolt is a fastener that features a circular loop, or eye, at one end and a threaded shank at the other. It is used to attach ropes, cables, or lifting devices for hoisting, securing, or anchor points on structures and equipment. Eyebolts are chosen by the load to be lifted, the material they are fastened into, and the environment in which they operate.

Eyebolts come in several variants. Standard threaded eyebolts have a simple eye connected to a threaded shank. Shoulder eyebolts include a shoulder or neck that seats against the lifting surface to provide bearing support and reduce thread damage under load. There are also welded or through-bolt types designed for permanent attachments. Materials commonly used include carbon steel, alloy steel, and stainless steel, with finishes such as galvanization or corrosion-resistant coatings for outdoor or wet environments.

Applications typically require that the load be applied along the axis of the bolt. Side loading or angular lifts can greatly reduce the effective load capacity and may cause premature failure. Eyebolts carry a rated capacity, often expressed as a working load limit (WLL), which should not be exceeded. Proper installation involves selecting an eyebolt compatible with the structure, fully engaging threaded shanks into a suitable threaded hole or anchor, and avoiding modifications that could weaken the bolt. Inspection before use is essential: look for deformation, cracks, corrosion, or elongation, and retire any suspect hardware. For lifts that involve angles, multiple anchors or specific rigging hardware should be used in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and safety standards.
