Exponeringsövningar, or exposure exercises, are a therapeutic technique used primarily in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to help individuals confront and overcome their fears and anxieties. The core principle behind exposure exercises is that by repeatedly and gradually facing the feared object, situation, or thought in a safe and controlled environment, the associated anxiety response diminishes over time. This process is often referred to as habituation.

There are several types of exposure exercises. In vivo exposure involves direct confrontation with the feared stimulus in real life, such as a person with a fear of heights standing on a low platform. Imaginal exposure involves vividly imagining the feared situation or object, often guided by a therapist. Interoceptive exposure is used to treat panic disorder and involves deliberately inducing physical sensations that are associated with panic, like rapid heartbeat or dizziness, to help the individual learn that these sensations are not dangerous.

The effectiveness of exposure exercises stems from several mechanisms. Habituation is key, where the fear response naturally fades with prolonged exposure. Another mechanism is inhibitory learning, where the individual learns that the feared outcome does not occur or is manageable. Self-efficacy is also enhanced as individuals gain confidence in their ability to cope with feared situations. Exposure exercises are typically conducted systematically, starting with less anxiety-provoking situations and progressing to more challenging ones, often with the support and guidance of a trained therapist. They are a well-established and evidence-based treatment for a range of anxiety disorders, including phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and social anxiety disorder.
