In Europe, exit markings typically conform to EN ISO 7010, which standardizes the symbols and colors of safety signs. Emergency exit signs are often green with a white pictogram, and they may be supplemented by additional illumination per emergency-lighting standards (such as EN 1838) to ensure visibility in darkness. While color conventions can vary by jurisdiction, the emphasis is on high contrast, legibility, and clear orientation.

Placement and maintenance are key considerations. Signs should be installed along escape routes at regular intervals, positioned above doors or at decision points, and kept unobstructed. Floor markings should be non-slip and durable, and all signage should be kept clean and functional. Regular inspections are typically required by safety regulations and building codes to ensure continued visibility, correct illumination, and adherence to applicable standards.
