EuroPalettStandard

EuroPalettStandard (EPS) is a widely recognized specification for European pallets designed to ensure interoperability across European supply chains. The standard defines a common footprint, construction principles, material requirements, quality control, and labeling to enable pallets to be used interchangeably across different manufacturers, warehouses, and transport modes.

The EPS specifies a standard footprint of 800 by 1200 millimeters, with a four-way entry configuration to allow handling by forklifts from all sides. Construction rules cover deck layout, board counts, and the use of stringers or blocks to support loads, together with tolerances for flatness, warp, and nail spacing. Timber employed must meet defined species and moisture criteria, typically softwood or engineered wood, with controlled moisture content to minimize shrinkage and decay. The standard also addresses repairability, encouraging the reconditioning and safe repair of damaged pallets to extend service life.

Marking requirements ensure traceability. Each EPS-compliant pallet bears an identifying mark indicating compliance, batch information, and the year of manufacture, with records kept by accredited inspection facilities. The governance body, the EuroPalettStandard Council, is composed of national pallet associations and industry stakeholders that administer the standard, approve inspectors, and publish periodic updates.

Adoption and impact: EPS aims to reduce mix-ups, prevent damage, and facilitate recycling and remanufacturing across Europe. By aligning design, testing, and markings, the standard supports efficient handling, cross-border trade, and sustainability goals.
