Erhvervsskole

Erhvervsskole is a type of Danish secondary educational institution that offers vocational education and training (EUD). The schools prepare students for specific trades by combining classroom instruction with practical training. They serve as a bridge between general education and the labor market and are designed for young people after primary school as well as for adults seeking skilled qualifications.

Most programs begin with grundforløb, a foundation course that introduces core subjects and basic vocational skills. After completing grundforløb, students continue with hovedforløb, the main program, which focuses on trade-specific competencies. Training is typically delivered through a mix of school-based teaching and hands-on learning in workplaces, often organized as an apprenticeship or practicum. In many programs, the practical component is central, with the student spending substantial time in a company.

Programs lead to a national vocational qualification, such as a svendebrev (trade certificate) for many crafts, or to a diploma for other professions. The overall duration varies, typically two to four years, depending on the trade and prior education. Graduates can enter the labor market directly or continue with further education, including higher-level vocational qualifications or certain academic programs.

Erhvervsskolerne are operated by municipalities and independent institutions and work closely with industry to ensure relevance to current labor market needs. They also provide continuing education and upskilling opportunities for adults. In the Danish education system, erhvervsskoler play a central role in preparing skilled workers and supporting regional economic development.
