Epiteelimuutokset, also known as epithelial changes, refer to alterations in the structure or function of epithelial tissues. Epithelial tissues form the linings of internal organs, body cavities, and the external surface of the body. These changes can arise from a variety of factors, including injury, inflammation, infection, or neoplastic processes.

One common type of epithelial change is metaplasia, where one mature cell type is replaced by another mature cell type. This is often a protective response to chronic irritation or stress. For example, squamous metaplasia can occur in the respiratory tract due to smoking, where the normal ciliated columnar epithelium is replaced by stratified squamous epithelium.

Dysplasia, another significant epithelial change, involves abnormal development of cells characterized by variations in size and shape, nuclear abnormalities, and loss of normal tissue organization. Dysplasia is considered a precancerous condition, meaning it has the potential to progress to cancer if left untreated. The severity of dysplasia is typically graded as mild, moderate, or severe.

Neoplastic changes, or cancer, represent the most severe form of epithelial alteration. In neoplastic growth, cells lose their normal regulatory mechanisms, leading to uncontrolled proliferation and invasion of surrounding tissues. Carcinomas are cancers that arise from epithelial cells.

The detection and characterization of epithelial changes are crucial for diagnosis and treatment planning. Histopathological examination of tissue biopsies is the primary method for identifying and classifying these alterations. Understanding the nature of epithelial changes allows for appropriate medical intervention to prevent disease progression or manage existing conditions.
