It is not a formal diagnosis in itself but is often associated with conduct disorders in childhood and adolescence, and antisocial personality disorder in adulthood. Individuals exhibiting epäsosiaalisuus may display traits such as deceitfulness, impulsivity, aggression, recklessness, irresponsibility, and a lack of remorse. They may frequently lie, engage in criminal behavior, get into physical fights, or disregard the safety of themselves or others. This behavior is often persistent and can have significant negative consequences for the individual's relationships, work, and overall well-being.

The origins of epäsosiaalisuus are understood to be complex, involving a combination of genetic predispositions, environmental factors, and developmental experiences. Factors such as a history of abuse or neglect, inconsistent parenting, peer group influences, and certain neurological differences are believed to contribute to its development. It is important to distinguish epäsosiaalisuus from shyness or introversion. While introverts may prefer solitude, epäsosiaalisuus involves a more active disregard for social norms and the well-being of others.
