Endodontics is a specialized branch of dentistry focused on the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases and injuries affecting the dental pulp, which is the inner part of a tooth containing nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. The primary goal of endodontic therapy is to save a natural tooth by removing infected or damaged pulp, cleaning and disinfecting the root canal system, and then sealing it to prevent further infection.

Common procedures in endodontics include root canal treatment, which is the most widely recognized procedure in the field. During this treatment, the infected pulp is removed through a small access hole drilled in the tooth’s surface. The canals are then cleaned, shaped, and filled with a biocompatible material, typically gutta-percha, to restore the tooth’s function and prevent reinfection. Additional procedures may include apexification, which is used in developing teeth with open apices, and root-end resection, where the tip of the root is removed and sealed to address persistent infection.

Endodontic treatment is often necessary when pulpitis (inflammation of the pulp) occurs due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures on a tooth, cracks or chips in a tooth, or trauma. Symptoms that may indicate the need for endodontic care include severe pain when biting or chewing, prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold, discoloration of the tooth, swelling or tenderness in the gums, and recurrent abscesses. If left untreated, these conditions can lead to more serious infections, tooth loss, or systemic health issues.

Endodontists are dental specialists who complete additional two to three years of advanced training beyond dental school to focus exclusively on endodontic procedures. They use advanced techniques, such as digital imaging and microscopic tools, to ensure precise and effective treatment. While root canal therapy has a high success rate, complications can occur, and follow-up care, including restorative treatment like crowns, is often recommended to maintain the tooth’s long-term health. Proper oral hygiene and regular dental visits also play a crucial role in preventing the need for endodontic intervention.
