Elmarknadsstruktur refers to the organizational framework of an electricity market. It describes how electricity generation, transmission, distribution, and retail are structured and how market participants interact. There are several common market structures, each with implications for competition, efficiency, and consumer choice.

One prevalent structure is vertical integration, where a single company controls all aspects of the electricity supply chain, from generation to retail. This model was common historically but has been largely replaced in many regions due to concerns about monopolies and a lack of competition.

Another structure is unbundling, which separates the different stages of the electricity value chain. Generation, transmission, and distribution are often separated into distinct entities. Transmission and distribution are typically regulated natural monopolies, while generation and retail are opened to competition. This allows for multiple electricity generators and suppliers to compete for customers.

Within a competitive generation and retail market, further distinctions can be made. Some markets are fully deregulated, allowing consumers to choose their electricity supplier. Others may maintain some level of regulation or operate as a hybrid system. The transmission and distribution systems are usually operated by independent system operators (ISOs) or regional transmission organizations (RTOs) to ensure fair access for all market participants and maintain grid reliability.
