In energy, many countries restructured electricity and natural gas markets in the 1990s and 2000s to promote competition among suppliers and service providers. Telecommunications often followed, easing entry barriers and price controls. Financial services have experienced partial deregulation in various periods, aiming to foster innovation and efficiency while sometimes increasing systemic risk.

Proponents argue that deregulation can lower prices, expand choices, spur investment, and improve efficiency through competition. Critics warn that it can lead to price volatility, reduced consumer protections, or the creation of market power if competition does not emerge or is inadequately overseen. Therefore, deregulation is frequently paired with targeted regulation, antitrust enforcement, consumer protections, and reliability standards to mitigate negative outcomes.
