Implementation methods include CSS techniques such as high-contrast outlines or glow effects; transitions that slowly bring the target forward; and robust focus management using keyboard navigation, including proper tab order and visible focus rings. Accessible implementations pair visual cues with ARIA attributes and descriptive labels, ensuring that non-visual information is conveyed to assistive technologies.

In accessibility terms, elementfocus supports screen reader users by highlighting current targets and describing required actions, while respecting user preferences for reduced motion.

Critiques note that overuse can be distracting or disruptive to workflow. Effective use is contextual, transient, and reversible, and should never rely on color alone, which may fail for users with color-vision deficiencies.
