Elektroentsefalogramm (EEG) is a non-invasive neurophysiological method used to record the electrical activity of the brain. It involves placing electrodes on the scalp, which detect the tiny electrical impulses generated by neurons as they communicate. These impulses are then amplified and displayed as wavy lines on a monitor or paper, representing brain wave patterns.

The patterns of brain waves recorded by an EEG can provide valuable information about the brain's function. Different states of consciousness, such as wakefulness, sleep, and anesthesia, are associated with distinct EEG patterns. Furthermore, EEG is a crucial tool for diagnosing and monitoring a variety of neurological conditions. It is particularly useful in the detection of epilepsy, where abnormal electrical discharges can be identified as characteristic spike-and-wave patterns.

EEG can also help in evaluating brain injuries, strokes, and brain tumors, by revealing areas of altered electrical activity. In sleep studies, EEG is used to diagnose sleep disorders like insomnia and narcolepsy. While EEG is a powerful diagnostic tool, it does not directly measure brain function at a cellular level but rather reflects the overall electrical synchronization of large neuronal populations. Interpretation of EEG requires specialized training and consideration of the patient's clinical context.
