Electronicphotonic

Electronicphotonic, often described as electronic-photonic integration, is a field focused on the design and integration of electronic and photonic components to transmit, process, and sense information. The aim is to combine the strengths of electronics—high-speed processing and mature fabrication—with photonics—high-bandwidth communication and low-loss data transport—in compact, energy-efficient devices and systems. The term is used for everything from individual optoelectronic components to fully integrated photonic circuits that merge electronic drivers and receivers with optical interconnects.

Core technologies include photodetectors and light sources such as lasers and LEDs, modulators that convert electrical signals into light, and photonic integrated circuits that route light through waveguides on platforms like silicon, indium phosphide, or other materials. Silicon photonics pursues CMOS-compatible platforms, often incorporating germanium or III–V materials for light generation and detection. Hybrid or heterogeneous integration enables combining disparate materials on a common substrate to realize complete electronicphotonic frontends and systems.

Applications span high-bandwidth fiber-optic communications, data-center interconnects, and high-performance computing, as well as sensing, lidar, and medical imaging. In data centers, electronicphotonic interconnects reduce power consumption and latency while increasing channel counts. In sensing, photonic components offer precise timing and spectral capabilities that improve measurement accuracy and reliability.

Challenges include fabrication complexity, thermal management, packaging, and cost, as well as optical-electrical impedance and crosstalk. Ongoing research focuses on scalable manufacturing, improved integration techniques, and new materials to boost efficiency and functionality. As electronics and photonics converge, electronicphotonic devices are expected to play a central role in communication networks, sensing platforms, and future computing architectures.
