Eldhoun

Eldhoun is a fictional coastal city-state in a temperate maritime realm. Located at the mouth of the Silven River, it occupies a crescent bay framed by basalt cliffs. The city functions as a regional trade hub, with a busy harbor, shipyards, and a glassworks district.

The name Eldhoun derives from proto-dialect roots meaning old haven or fire harbor, though exact origins are uncertain and debated among scholars.

The climate is temperate with wet winters and dry summers, influenced by coastal fog. The harbor is protected by a double breakwater, and nearby kelp forests support fishing and ferry operations.

Eldhoun traces its origins to small trading coves settled in the early medieval era, gradually unifying under a merchant council. It gained autonomy in the 12th century and evolved into a city-state with a codified charter. It endured sieges and embargoes, stabilizing through alliances and shipbuilding exports.

Governance and economy: Eldhoun is governed by a Common Assembly and an elected Magistrate. The economy centers on fishing, shipyards, glassmaking, and cross-sea trade in timber, resin, and grain. It maintains guilds that regulate crafts and harbor operations.
