Protodialect is a theoretical construct in historical linguistics that denotes the common ancestor of the dialects within a single language. It sits between the broader proto-language, which links multiple languages, and the later regional dialects that diverge geographically or socially. A protodialect thus reflects features that existed in the speech community before noticeable dialectal differentiation.

Researchers reconstruct protodialects by applying the comparative method to the dialects of a language and, when possible, by internal reconstruction to infer earlier stages. The aim is to identify regular sound correspondences, shared morphemes, and common lexical items that point to a single, prior form specific to that language’s varieties. The resulting reconstruction is a hypothetical, provisional snapshot of how the language may have looked and functioned before its dialects split further.

Protodialects are inherently speculative and depend on the available data and the assumptions of the reconstruction. They are not replacements for proto-language reconstructions, which concern relationships across languages, but they help explain internal relationships among dialects and the pathways of divergence within a language.

Examples are typically hypothetical and used to illustrate internal history rather than to assert proven forms. For instance, a protodialect of an ancient Greek continuum might be posited as the shared features before Ionic and Doric diverged, or a protodialect of early English dialects could describe features before regional varieties settled. The concept serves to illuminate how dialects relate to each other within the broader lineage of a language.
