Depending on the organization, the cycle may be described as three phases (Vorbereitung, Einsatz, Nachbereitung) or four phases (Vorbereitung, Durchführung, Nachbereitung, Auswertung).

Applications of the Einsatzzyklus span emergency services, disaster response, public safety, and civil protection, where it aligns with incident command systems and standard operating procedures. In the industrial and IT sectors, analogous concepts are used in incident management, business continuity, and disaster recovery planning, where lessons from operations are integrated into future response plans.
