Eggproducing refers to organisms, systems, or practices that generate eggs as part of reproduction or as a harvestable product. In biology, egg production occurs in oviparous species whose eggs develop outside the female body after laying. In agriculture, egg production usually describes the management of female birds, especially domestic chickens, to lay eggs for consumption, incubation, or breeding.

Biological process: In birds, a mature ovum is released and travels through the oviduct, where albumen, membranes, and the shell are formed before the egg is laid. The cycle is influenced by genetics, age, nutrition, daylight, and environment. Laying frequency varies, with commercial layers often producing an egg nearly daily under optimal conditions; molts can temporarily pause production.

Production systems: Domestic egg production uses housing types ranging from enriched cages to cage-free and free-range systems, with welfare standards guiding housing, enrichment, ventilation, and space. Nutrition, water, lighting schedules (photoperiods), and disease control affect yield and egg quality. Egg size and shell color depend on breed and feed; color does not indicate quality.

Product handling and quality: After collection, eggs are cleaned, sanitized, cooled, graded by size, and packaged. Quality is assessed by shell integrity, cleanliness, air cell size, and internal factors such as yolk and albumen consistency. Marketed eggs may be fresh, pasteurized, or processed into value-added products.

Economic and regulatory context: Egg production is influenced by price cycles, feed costs, and consumer demand. Regulations address animal welfare, biosecurity, food safety, labeling, and nutrition programs. Environmental considerations include manure management and energy use in housing and processing.
