Eelvõimendilt refers to a preamplifier stage in an audio system. Its primary function is to boost a weak input signal to a level that is suitable for the main power amplifier. This is particularly important for low-level sources such as turntables, microphones, or certain digital audio outputs. Without a preamplifier, these signals might be too quiet to be effectively amplified by the power amplifier, leading to a weak or inaudible output.

The preamplifier stage often performs other crucial tasks beyond simple amplification. It can include input switching, allowing the user to select between different audio sources. Tone controls for adjusting bass and treble, and sometimes a balance control for adjusting the stereo image, are also commonly found in preamplifiers. Furthermore, in systems with a phono input, the preamplifier contains the necessary equalization circuitry to correct the RIAA curve applied during vinyl record mastering. This ensures that vinyl playback is tonally accurate.

The quality of the preamplifier significantly impacts the overall sound quality of an audio system. A well-designed preamplifier can provide a clean and transparent signal path, minimizing noise and distortion. Conversely, a poorly designed one can introduce unwanted coloration, noise, or distortion, degrading the audio experience. In some modern integrated amplifiers, the preamplifier and power amplifier sections are housed within the same chassis, but they still perform distinct functions. Dedicated standalone preamplifiers are often favored by audiophiles seeking the highest possible audio fidelity and flexibility in system configuration.
