ESDkaitset

ESDkaitset, or electrostatic discharge protection, encompasses the practices, equipment, and materials used to prevent damage to electronic components from electrostatic discharge. ESD occurs when built-up electric charges transfer between objects, which can happen during handling, assembly, testing, or transportation.

Many semiconductor devices are highly sensitive; even small charges can cause immediate failure, degrade performance, or create latent defects that shorten lifetimes. That risk is especially high in modern microelectronics with small geometries and low voltage margins.

Protection strategies include establishing ESD Protected Areas (EPAs), grounding personnel and tools, using antistatic or ESD-safe materials, and controlling humidity and contamination. Core items are grounded wrist straps, ESD mats, grounded workstations, ESD-safe packaging (bags, trays), and anti-static tools. In non-conductive environments, ionization may be used to neutralize charges. Training and procedures govern handling, storage, and transport.

Standards and guidelines guide ESD programs. The main references include ANSI/ESD S20.20 and IEC 61340-5-1, which define requirements for ESD protected areas, equipment, and practices, as well as packaging and personnel grounding. Device sensitivity testing, using models such as HBM (human body model) or CDM (charged device model), informs the level of protection required.

In practice, ESDkaitset is an ongoing program requiring audits, regular maintenance of equipment, humidity control, and awareness. When implemented properly, it reduces device failures, improves yield, and preserves reliability in electronics manufacturing, repair, and handling environments.
